Earrings In History

Earrings are the form of jewelry the most worn around the world. And while they have oftentimes been the domain of women, today both men and women wear earrings. Jewelry stores everywhere have a large choice of earrings, for women and men, with natural stones like turquoise, onyx, jade and even with other materials like wood, mother of pearl. If you prefer you can find gold or silver earrings, with nothing more than the beauty of the gleaming metal for adornment.

At one time in history ear piercing was considered to be therapeutic- it was said that it prevented eye problems – and apotropaic – it was thought to protect wearers from danger – it was therefore important to have children’s ear pierced early in life.

Wearing a single earring was for men the symbol of his belonging to a social group. It symbolized the power and prestige of the aristocracy, it stigmatized people who were excluded, slaves, and other undesirables.

We find in literature many examples of men wearing earrings in ancient Rome and Greece. Apuleius (c. 125 – c. 180 CE) was a Latin prose writer who tells us that Achilles was wearing earrings and Plato (c. 428–427 BCE) mentions the wearing of gold earrings by some men.

Saint Augustine (354-430 CE) rose in opposition against the usage of earrings by men of his times.

Besides the literature we can turn to ancient art to get information about earrings wear. Greek statues of Praxiteles and many others are wearing earrings. Some historians have affirmed that only Gods and Goddesses had pierced ears, but this affirmation was proven wrong by archeological finds.

Earrings were found in the ruins of Pompeii, of which it was written that they resembled drops of water as much by they form as their lightness, probably the precursor of today’s gold and silver drop earrings.

No discussion about earrings in ancient history would be complete without a mention of the bible thus we find:

Ezekiel 16:12 And I put a ring on your nose and earrings in your ears and a beautiful crown on your head.

Numbers 31:50 And we have brought the Lord’s offering, what each man found, articles of gold, armlets and bracelets, signet rings, earrings, and beads, to make atonement for ourselves before the Lord.”

Exodus 35:22 So they came, both men and women. All who were of a willing heart brought brooches and earrings and signet rings and armlets, all sorts of gold objects, every man dedicating an offering of gold to the Lord.
